About ExpatBound

An independent guide for Americans who are ready to build a life in another country, and want the full picture before they go.

Why we exist

More Americans are retiring, working remotely, and raising families overseas than ever, and the information they find is often out of date, written to sell something, or silent about the hard parts. ExpatBound was built to be the guide we'd want before a move: clear, current, and honest about trade-offs.

How we research

  1. Official sources first. Visa requirements come from immigration agencies and consulates. Tax rules come from IRS.gov. Benefits information comes from SSA.gov, Medicare.gov, and VA.gov. Safety information comes from the State Department.
  2. We show our work. Every guide lists its sources and the date it was last reviewed.
  3. We say what we don't know. When a rule is in flux or a consulate applies it differently, we say so instead of guessing.
  4. We update. Many requirements are tied to benchmarks that change every January, such as minimum wages. We review guides when those change.

What we're not

We're not lawyers, immigration agents, tax preparers, or financial advisers, and nothing here is personal advice. We explain how things work so you can ask better questions of the professionals and officials who make the decisions. Read our full disclaimer.

How we make money

ExpatBound may earn commissions from some partner links in the future, and we'll always label them. Partners never pay for placement in our country guides or rankings. See our affiliate disclosure.
