Common questions
Is ExpatBound free?
Yes. Every guide and tool is free, with no account required.
Can you tell me if I qualify for a visa?
We can't assess individual cases. Our Visa Income Checker compares your income with published requirements, and each country guide links to the official source. The consulate makes the decision.
How often are guides updated?
Each guide shows its last review date. We prioritize updates when benchmarks change (often in January) or when a country announces a new program or closes an old one.
Do I lose my US citizenship if I move abroad?
No. Living abroad doesn't affect your citizenship. Many countries allow dual citizenship, and the US generally permits it too. See citizenship by descent.
Do I still have to file US taxes?
Yes, US citizens file on worldwide income wherever they live. See US taxes abroad and FBAR and FATCA.
Can I keep getting Social Security abroad?
In most countries, yes. See Social Security abroad.
Does Medicare work overseas?
Generally not. See healthcare abroad and international health insurance.
I'm a veteran. Does the VA help with care abroad?
Veterans with service-connected conditions may be covered for treatment of those conditions abroad through the VA Foreign Medical Program. See healthcare abroad and confirm your eligibility with the VA.
Can I vote from abroad?
Yes. Request an absentee ballot each year using the Federal Post Card Application. See voting from abroad.
Where should I start?
Try the Country Matcher, then work through the moving abroad checklist.
